SOLUTION

GIVEN

An art dealer sold a painting for Rs. 150000 at a loss of 20%

TO DETERMINE

The amount at which he bought the painting

EVALUATION

Let Rs. x be the amount at which the art dealer bought the painting

Now it is given that the art dealer sold the painting at a loss of 20%

So selling price

 \displaystyle \sf{ = x - \frac{20x}{100}  }

 \displaystyle \sf{ = x - \frac{x}{5}  }

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{4x}{5}  }

So by the given condition

 \displaystyle \sf{  \frac{4x}{5}  = 150000 }

 \displaystyle \sf{  \implies \:  x  = 150000 \times  \frac{5}{4}  }

 \displaystyle \sf{  \implies \:  x  = 150000 \times  1.25  }

∴ x = 187500

So the amount at which the art dealer bought the painting = Rs. 187500
