Hey mate...
Explanation:
Our present curricula in schools and colleges might meet the criteria of providing good educational qualifications, high rankings of top universities and colleges, high percentage or grades of students in schools but there is a fundamental flaw in the way we view learning and education. There has been an erosion of the more fundamental sense of humanity. We have highly trained and skilled engineers, doctors, professors, politicians and civil servants- with mastery in their field of specialization, however, lacking in a sense of morality and ethics. We can see trained doctors who take part in illegal organ robbery, trade and other malpractices, qualified engineers and scientists who misuse their scientific knowledge for wrongdoings, professional politicians with fake promises, civil servants or bureaucrats who fill their own pockets with bribes and accountants and bankers who divert national funds into their own accounts, educated professionals and teachers who molest and harass their students. The important question to ask ourselves is: Why?
A humanistic and holistic approach to education is required if we want our children to grow with the prerequisite skills as well as with a sense of responsibility and duty towards the common good of the community. This idea can be disputed from various ideological stances as well as by various sections of the society. The system of value education entails the idea that are some core, fundamental, universal values that we as human beings can agree upon. These values are not necessarily derived from religious texts but rather found in our understanding and conscience that guide our actions. The great philosophical teacher and socio-religious reformer Swami Vivekananda advocated in favour of inculcating moral attitudes and values in students such as unconditional love and kindness, honesty, hard work, cooperation, respect for others, compassion and forgiveness.
Character- building is an integral part of value based education. When we teach our children the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, just and unjust, it is only then we could expect them to positively contribute to our societies. This would further translate into lowering the rates of crimes such as corruption, embezzlement, bribery, rape, murder, etc. by strengthening the moral fiber within society. Ordinary teachers can bring about extraordinary transformation in our society. At the heart of value education are the teachers who impart it. We often remember a few teachers from our childhood who influenced us in one way or the other, who have left a lasting impression on us. Thus, early childhood days are very crucial and important for a person’s personality development. We need teachers who are well paid, have good educational and professional qualifications as well as have the ability to impart value education to young students. A society that invests in its children’s education is destined to success and growth.
The increasing cases of ethnic cleansing, intolerance, communitarian animosity and religious disharmony are a by-product of the purely dialectical approach of the society that seeks to other. What value education aims to achieve is not an eradication of the natural biases and prejudices and the feeling of ‘other’ in human beings but a provision of the needed tools to deal with innate feelings of hatred, selfishness, biases and reject them on grounds that they don’t have a basis in rationality and reasonableness.
Moral values present a true perspective of development of a society or nation. Development has long been assessed in terms of nominal gross domestic product, industrialization and economic progress, but an important and rather indispensable component that is missing in this assessment is of the worth of value-based education. The theory of value based education presented in this article may seem a like distant dream far from reality, but there is an element of merit in this idea that may be lost if ignored, thus it demands recognition and immediate acknowledgement. If given enough effort and attention, we can potentially look at a society of morally refined individuals in the future.
