Those of our Grandparents' generation that live today recount the misery some of them went through when India broke up in 1947. Families of Bengalis and Punjabis living in Bengal and Punjab respectively were torn apart due the ensuing violence and destruction. Lives were lost, wealth plundered, properties destroyed and families broken up.
War is one of the worst forms of violence perpetrated on human populations. Ever since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the long-ravaged war in Vietnam, civil society across the world becomes terrified whenever countries are in a war anywhere in the world. Besides causing immediate destruction to life and property, the lingering effects of modern warheads leaves several generations crippled. To rebuild the region after the devastation also becomes quite a task.
In spite of the United Nations and its predecessor, the League of Nations, constantly trying to spread peace, trigger-happy politicians continue to go into war for frivolous reasons. With the end of the Cold War, after the break-up of USSR and the ushering in of democracy across Eastern Europe, wise men across the world thought hotspots of war had reduced, but fresh differences have raised their ugly heads elsewhere in the world.
