EXPLANATION.

mass of gun = Mg = 1500 kg

velocity of gun before the shell fired = 0

mass of shell = Ms = 10 kg

velocity of shell = 400 m/s = Vs

To find the recoil velocity of the gun ?

according to the question,

We can find by using the principal of

conservation of momentum.

Let Pb be the total momentum before the shell

fired

velocity of gun before the shell fired = 0

Therefore,

Pg = 0

as the velocity of shell before fired = 0

Ps = 0

Therefore,

Pb = Pg + Ps = 0

Let Pa be the total momentum after shell is fired

gun momentum after the shell fired = Pg

Pg = Mg. Vr

Pg = 1500.Vr

the shell momentum = Ps

Ps = Ms. Vs

Ps = 10 X 400 = 4000 kg m/s

Therefore,

Pa = Pg + Ps

Pa = 1500.Vr + 4000

Therefore,

momentum is conserved,

Pb = Pa

0 = 1500 . Vr + 4000

- 4000 = 1500 .Vr

Vr = - 2.67 m/s

Therefore,

Recoil velocity of gun = -2.67 m/s
