An athlete runs a certain distance before taking a long jump so that he can get a high velocity in the time of jumping as the acceleration starts when he begins to run. Till the time of jumping, he would acquire a high velocity which would help him to jump higher. And also the athlete starts running before in order to overcome the inertia of rest so that he doesn't require extra energy to jump.
HOPE THIS COULD HELP!!
