An atom can achieve octet in three ways:

1) Ionic bond: Two atoms which is in shot and excess of equal number of electrons for octet can achieve it by complete transfer of electrons. Eg: NaCl.

2) Covalent bond: Attaining octet in valence shell by partial transfer or sharing of electron pairs by all the atoms involved in bonding. Eg: H₂

3) Dative bond or co-ordinate bond: Attaining octet by sharing of electron pairs by only ligands and central atoms simply provides orbital for it. Eg: [Cr(H₂O)₄Cl₂]Br.
