atomic mass = number of protons + number of neutrons

40 = 18 + neutrons

neutrons =40-18

neutrons = 22

Ar^{40} _{18} means the relative atomic mass is on top and atomic no. is at the bottom.

So the protons = 18

          neutrons = ( 40-18 ) = 22
