Sever Earthquake Hits Gujarat, Many feared dead

- Gujarat was struck yesterday morning by a massive 7.9 earthquake at the Richter scale. In the major earthquake that hit the state at 8:40 am, more than 20,000 people were killed. It lasted two minutes but many towns and villages were absolutely destroyed within those two minutes.
- The district capital Bhuj was the worst hit place since the epicentre. The entire communication network in the area affected was seriously damaged and collapsed. In Bhuj also the revered Swaminarayan Temple was seriously damaged
- The 7.9 Richter quake could be felt in western Gujarat as far away as Delhi capital, the Himalayas and the tropical Chennai. The old walled town of Bhuj, 12 miles from its epicentre, where a single 4-story house crashed 150 people died, and Ahmedabad was one of the most severe areas affected. But the earthquake was narrowly devastating, also in Ahmedabad. There were some 40 buildings collapsed but the majority of the city remained stable.

The first wave was felt around 3 AM while everyone's still sleeping. Then the second wave hit around 4 AM, with some more aftershocks. Those with poor quality homes were hit hard, with most of them razed to the ground. The locals immediately rallied with each other and helped save anything they can, moving things out of the rubble.
Also, there were visits by the heads of various organizations, and they promised any form of help they can provide. A relief camp was set up temporarily for the victims whose houses were damaged, while various offers of help have also come in from people worldwide.
The government has promised to look into the cause of the displaced victims. Many volunteer groups have organized helplines to assist the people in collecting any contributions from other people, The injured people were taken to he hospital, where they are given treatment accordingly. The rehabilitation of these people remains the top priority for those concerned, and while the spread of any pandemic is a serious concern for the authorities, there are serious concerns for any form of spread of infection among the people.
And the national as well as international governments have raised a lot of questions about how the disaster has been dealt, and hope that any future events such as this may be dealt with in a much better way.
