Answer:

The wars fought between the British and French on Indian soil are known as the ‘Carnatic Wars.’ There were three of these wars:-

First Carnatic War (1746 - 1748)

Second Carnatic War (1749 - 54)

Third Carnatic War (1756 - 1763)

Causes of the Carnatic Wars:-

1) First Carnatic War: The Austrian War of succession was the main cause for the First Carnatic War. It ended with the treaty of Aix - la - Chapelle.

2) Second Carnatic War: There was a war of succession between Chanda Sahib and Anwar ud Din for the Carnatic Nawabship. Simultaneously, a war broke out between Mujaffar Jung and Nasir Jung for Deccan Subedar. Mujaffar Jung & Chanda Sahib formed a secret alliance with the French. The three forces combined and attacked Nasir Jung and Anwar ud Din. Anwar ud Din was killed. The British form an alliance with Nasir Jung and defeat the triple alliance.

3) Third Carnatic War: When the French besieged Madras, Robert Clive, a British general, sent Colonel Ford to occupy the Northern Circars. Both sides were enraged because the opposition had occupied their respective territories. This resulted in a war.
