Explanation:

Given that,

An echo sounder in a fishing boat receives an echo from a shoal of fish 0.4 seconds after it was sent, t = 0.4 s

Speed of sound in water, v = 1500 m/s

Let the shoal is d meter deep. We know that an echo travels twice a distance during its motion as :

Speed, v=\dfrac{d}{t}

d = 2 d

v=\dfrac{2d}{t}

d=\dfrac{vt}{2}

d=\dfrac{1500\times 0.4}{2}

d = 300 m

So, the shoal is 300 meters deep. Hence, this is the required solution.
