An electric bulb, when connected across a power supply of 220 V, consumes a power of 60 W. If the supply drops to 180 V, what will be the power consumed? If the supply is suddenly increased to 240 V, what will be the power consumed?

Explanation:

The bulb consumes the power P. It is operated at V voltage and is given by  

R = V2P = 806.67 Ω.  

Now, there is a drop is supply to V’ = 180 V.

Hence, the consumed power is 40 W. This can be derived as P’ = V’2R = 40 W;

(b) The power supply raises to V” = 240 V. So,

P” = V”2R = 71 W
