An electric dipole free to move is placed ina uniform electric field. Write the condition for the dipole to have 1. Maximum torque and 2. Half the maximum value of torque.

ANSWER

(i) Parallel to the field: The net force and torque on the dipole is zero. Hence, dipole will not move.

(ii) Perpendicular to the field: The net force is zero but torque is maximum. Hence, dipole will rotate to align itself along the field.
