The electric field at point P whose position vector makes an angle θ with the x axis will make an angle of (θ + α).

Given-

  • tan α = tan θ/2

We know that electric field at any point can be given by

E = P/4πε₀ (1/r³) (3 cos² θ + 1) ^1/2

where P is dipole moment, θ is the angle from dipole and r is the distance.

Tan α = tan θ/2

We can see from the attached picture electric field makes an angle of α with point in a line and θ is the angle between x axis and the point.

So electric field makes an angle of θ + α with x axis.
