If there is no leak in the tanks then there is no chance that the petrol in the tank catches fire

No. Generally speaking, the gas inside will be above the fuel’s upper limit of flammability. That is: there isn't enough oxygen in the tank in relation to gas fumes for combustion to occur.

If the tank were completely empty except for gas fumes, and air were introduced, you might hear a single thud. And if there were any liquid fuel in the tank, it would simply be displacing fumes, and the thud would be less.

Liquid gasoline doesn't burn. Only fumes burn, and only when properly mixed with oxygen. Too much or too little fuel, in relation to oxygen, will not burn. It has to be just right (or at least, kind of close).

Not as cool as Hollywood makes it out to be, I'm afraid.
