Given info : An element ¹²M₂₄ forms ionic compound with another element Y.

We have to find the charge on the ion formed by M is ...

Solution : we know, ionic compound is formed by complete transfer of electron from electropositive atom to electronegative atom.

Here atomic no of M = 12

So, electronic configuration of M = 1s², 2s², 2p⁶ , 3s²

Here it is clear that, there are only two electrons in the outermost shell of M, so transfer of electron to Y, it makes M²⁺ ion.

Then charge on the ion formed by M is +2
