Elements that belong in the p block have group numbers 13–18. If you see the group numbers you can determine the number of valence electrons that group elements have.

Eg. An element from Group 14 will have 14–10=4 valence electrons. An element from Group 18 will have 18–10 =8 valence electrons.

So if the element has four valence electrons then it belongs to group 14(IV A) which is the carbon family. The general outer orbit configuration of group 14 elements is ns2np2.

This shows there are 2 unpaired electrons in the p orbitals.
