Hence, M shell = 3 rd shell

2 electrons in M shell means the other 2 shells that come before it are completely filled.

Therefore, the electronic configuration of the element is 2, 8, 2

Atomic number = 12

Element is Magnesium (Mg).

It forms Mg 2+ cation since it has 2 electrons in its valence shell.
