electrons to obtain an octet in its outermost electron shell. Because when the atom lose two electrons to obtain octet it require comparatively lower energy. When it gain six electrons to obtain octet, due to intra-electronic repulsion the process requires much higher energy to overcome the energy barrier. So the conclusion is losing two electrons is energetically favourable than gaining six electrons.
