Answer:

On the basis of their properties, elements can broadly classify as metal and non-metals.

Metals are electropositive elements with shiny surface, malleable and ductile nature, sonorous, and highly reactive. On the contrary non-metals are electronegative elements which mainly exist in gaseous or liquid state.

Hence an element is sonorous and highly ductile should be a metallic element. It will be reactive towards air and moisture, ductile, malleable, corrosive, etc. Carbon is a non-metal and is  known to form the largest number of compounds due to two reasons:

Catenation - The ability of carbon to form bonds with the atoms of itself resulting in the large chains and rings of carbon. It causes large no. of chain and ring compounds.

Tetravalency - Due to tetravalency, carbon can form bonds with other tetravalent elements and monovalent elements like hydrogen, chlorine, bromine etc.
