HEY MATE!

ELEMENT-CARBON

ALLPTROPE A-DIAMOND

ALLOTROPE B-GRAPHITE

THE REASON FOR THE DIFFERENT PROPERTIES IS DUE TO STRUCTURAL AND MOLECULAR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM.

I HOPE IT HELPS YOU!

The element of group 14 with listed characteristics is Carbon. Allotrope A is diamond and allotrope B is graphite.

•The reason for difference in their characteristics, can be analyzed at molecular level.

•Diamond has all the 4 carbon bonded with carbons, while graphite has only 3 carbon bonded with carbons.

•This means hybridisation of diamond is sp3 and carbon is sp2.

•This causes presence of free electrons in graphite, which owes to electricity conduction.

•Diamond does not have any free electron, thus it doesn't conduct electricity.

•The soft nature of graphite comes from weak Van Der Waal forces, which causes easy movement of layers.

•Diamond has tetrahedral structure, with all the carbons bonded with strong covalent bonds.

•This gives hardness to diamond.
