An element X burns in oxygen to form the oxide XO, a white ash which dissolves in dilute hydrochloric acid. The oxide also turns a solution of red litmus blue. The element also reacts vigorously with steam to produce the same oxide XO.
a) i) Identify the element X and state whether it is a metal or a nonmetal.
ii) Identify its oxide XO and state whether it’s aqueous solution is acidic or basic.
b) Write the chemical equation for –

ANSWER----

◆ The element name is MAGNESIUM (Mg) and it is metal.

◆When Magnesium react with hydrochloride acid.

EQUATION = Mg + 2HCl ---MgCl2 + H2

◆ When Magnesium react with oxygen tmso it give Magnesium Oxide.

EQUATION = 2Mg + O2 ---- 2MgO

Aqueous solution is basic because all oxides states are basic in nature..

Oxide also turns a solution of red litmus into blue.

◆ When Magnesium react with steam

EQUATION = Mg + H2O ---- MgO + H2

Magnesium react with steam very vigorously.
