An elevator descends into a mine shaft at the rate of 9m/min. If the descend

starts from 10m above the ground, how long will it take to reach 350m deep

from the ground ?

Solution:

The elevator has to travel 10m till the ground, then 350 m

more.

So, Distance between elevator and mineshaft = 10 – (-350)

                                                                             = 360 m

If the elevator's speed is 9 m/min

Then, Time taken to cover 9 m = 1 minute

Time taken to cover 360 m = 360 ÷ 9 = 40 mins
