Given,

An elevator is 12 meters below the ground . It descends to a point 100 meters below the ground.

To Find,

What is the change in the elevation of the elevator?

Solution,

Here, we have

Elevator was 12 m below ground

⇒ Point A = -12

Elevator reached to a point 100m below ground

⇒ Point B = -100

Change in elevation = Point B - Point A

                                  = -100 - (-12)

                                  = -100 + 12

                                  = -88 meters

Hence, there is a change of -88 metres in the elevation of the elevator.
