Solution :

So, the remaining days are the number of idle days  = 60 - x

Calculating Positive payment

The amount paid for each day of work to the worker is Rs. 20. So, the payment for x days of work will be :

           = Rs. 20x

Calculating Negative payment

The amount deducted for each idle day  to the worker is Rs. 3. So, the payment deducted for (60-x) days of work will be :

           = Rs. 3(60-x)

Thus, the final payment will be the total payment for work subtracted by the deductions of idle days i.e.

          $P = 20x - 3(60 - x)\\280 = 20x - 180 + 3x\\280 + 180 = (20+3)x\\x = 460/23\\x = 20$

Thus, the number of working days = 20

The number of idle days = 60 - 20 = 40

Hence, the worker remains idle for 40 days.
