An empty fuel unit is ejected from a spacecraft in deep space. There is no air or other gases here, and effectively no gravity.

Answer:

The only force acting on the two units in your scenario is whatever force you “ejected” with.

If you just released the tank, it would not move at all relative to the craft.

If you gave it a good hard shove, it would gradually drift away as both the craft and tank would now be on different vectors than the original.

If you used a rocket on the tank to push it away, the original craft’s vector would not change, but that of the tank would (and so would that of the exhaust from that rocket)

If the craft underwent thrust after releasing the tank, the same would happen in reverse, the tank would continue course but the craft’s vector would change (as would the craft’s exhaust)
