When an empty polythene bag is placed on a flame of a stove burns or melts. However, we can make a few cups of tea by placing water filled polythene bag on a flame of a stove.

The reason behind the above phenomenon is the high value of the specific heat capacity of water, due to which the water can absorb a very high amount of heat energy with very less change in its temperature.

Therefore when we place a polythene bag filled with water above a flame of the stove, the heat energy from the stove gets transferred to the water which increases the temperature of the water. Hence the polythene bag is unable to reach its ignition temperature which prevents its burning or melting. Therefore it becomes possible for the water to get boiled without the polythene burning or melting.
