Passed=80%

Failed=100-80=20%

Let total candidates be x

Then

20%of x =60

x=60×100÷20=300

% candidates passed = 80%
% of candidates failed= 100-80=20%
so,
20% of x= 60
20/100×x=60
x= 60×100/20
x= 300
so, no. of candidates appeared = 300
