Given:
An equilateral prism of ice (n=1.31) is immersed in water (n=1.33).
To find:
Calculate the angle of Deviation produced for a ray of light incident at 30° on one face of the prism.
Solution:
From given, we have,
For an equilateral prism,
A = 30° , aμg = 1.31, aμw = 1.33
∴ wμg = 1.31/1.33 = 0.9849
For refraction, we have,
i1 = 30°, r1 = ?
wμg = sin i1/sin r1 = 0.9849
sin r1 = sin i1/0.9849 = sin 30°/0.9849 = 0.5076
∴ r1 = 30.50°
r1 + r2 = A
r2 = A - r1 = 60° - 30.50° = 29.49°
Again,
wμg = sin i2/sin r2
wμg = sin i2/sin 29.49° = 0.9849
sin i2 = 0.4848
i2 = 29°
Angle of deviation,
δ = i1 + i2 - A = 30° + 29° - 60° = -1°
Therefore, the angle of deviation is 1°
