The prism formula is μ=sin(A+δm2)sin(A2), where μ,A and δm are the refractive index, angle of the prism and the angle of minimum deviation, respectively.

It is given that A=40o and δm=40o.

⇒μ=sin(40o+40o2)sin(40o2)=sin60osin20o=3–√.

⇒ The refractive index of the prism is 2–√.
