You were walking on the road, suddenly you saw a shiny thing lying on the corner of the road, for sometime you thought you found some money but when you go there and pick it up. You found that it is not any money rather it is just a piece of round shape metal looking exactly like money but not a money. Similarly ‘All that glitters is not gold’ means that all the shining and glittery things are not gold or valuable thing.
The proverb ‘All that glitters is not gold’ is a guidance to people saying that any thing, products or people should not be judged or commented only on the basis of look or outer appearance because the thing may look beautiful, charming, interesting by outer appearance but from inside it may be dull, dirty, evil, bad. In this world of falsehood and dishonesty we should not judge things based on outer appearance. Often a thing appears to be very durable and cheap may turned out a duplicate. The quality and durability of a thing can only be judged by its use only. Similarly, a person who is looking good, well dressed, talented is not compulsory that he is good, kind hearted and humble person.
Appearance may be false and misleading. The only way to save ourselves from fraud is to be very attentive and careful in life with good observance. So beware of the appearance, judge the things from its original contents. Hence, it is rightly said that ‘All that glitters is not gold’.
