At a distance of 11km to the west of Hyderabad, rests the historic Golconda Fort, which was once known to be a landmark that governed the destiny of South India. It is one of biggest fortress in the Deccan Plateau that rests above the land at approximately 400 ft. altitude. From the Kakatiyas of Warangal to the Baihmanis and from Qutb Shahi kings later to Aurangazeb, the fort served all the dynasties that ruled Hyderabad during the past.
Even today after almost 800 years, the fort stands as not only Hyderabad's greatest architectural wonders, but of whole India too. Apart from an architectural masterpiece, the fort's fantastic acoustic effect make it an explicit engineering marvel of the past. Few structural features that separate Golconda Fort from other fortresses in India are:
its eight imposing gateways,
as many as 87 bastions rising up to 15 to 18 metres,
the double wall that follows the foot of the hill on which the bastion stands,'
the East Gate, one of the biggest entrances of the fort and
a three- storeyed armoury building.
Golconda Fort took the initiative of making the surrounding area its own well planned township in Deccan Plateau. Fortunately, the township happened to be one of the splendid cities of medieval world that actively took part in gems and diamond trade. The year old brown brick walls spread over manicured green lawns take us to the era of medieval India whose fame and glory has touched the heart of millions of historians and wanderlusts.
