The Great Soul, Mahatma Gandhi is called the Father of the Nation. He was a freedom fighter who did not believe in guns and violence to achieve independence from the British rule. It was his philosophy of truth and non-violence that paved the way for the freedom from the British.

His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869 in Gujarat to Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi and Putlibai.

The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhi Jayanti, is celebrated on October 2 as a national event across India. This day is observed across the entire world as the International Day of Non-violence. Even today he is honoured as the symbol of hope not only for India but the world.

Mahatma Gandhi contributed significantly to the struggle for freedom against the British. But this is only one of his many achievements. He was a strong opponent of discrimination on the basis of race, caste, skin color and religion. His vision of equality inspired people across the world to raise their voice against any kind of discrimination.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." This shows his selfless sacrifice for the people of India.

He studied law for one year at the University of Bombay and later he moved to University College London from where he graduated in 1891. Mahatma Gandhi was admitted to the Bar Council of England.

Mahatma Gandhi later went to South Africa. There he experienced the inhumane practice of racism. Mahatma Gandhi first employed non-violent civil disobedience in South Africa, in the struggle for civil rights for Indians.

His non-violence and satyagraha policy lead India to achieve Independence without shedding a drop of blood.

Mahatma Gandhi believed in simple living and used to wear traditional Indian dhoti and a shawl. He was a person of great humility.

The Dandi Salt March organised by Mahatma Gandhi will never be forgotten. He shocked the British in 1930 with his 440 km long walk on foot to the ocean. It was primarily to challenge the salt tax. During this protest march about 60,000 people were imprisoned.

Gandhi believed that all human beings are God’s special people and must be treated equally irrespective of their caste, color, language, creed, region, and religion. He campaigned for the empowerment of the lower caste of the Untouchables- whom he called Harijans (the children of God).

In 1942, Gandhi urged Indians to stop cooperating with the British and called for Quit India movement. The story of India’s struggle for Independence was long and many people sacrificed their lives during the process. Finally, India achieved freedom in August, 1947.

The Father of the Nation was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse.

The Father of the Nation was a writer. He wrote several books. (1) An Autobiography- The Story of My Experiments with Truth (2)Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule and

(3) Key to Health.

Mahatma Gandhi will always be remembered for his selfless love for the country and her citizens, truth and non violence, and for his hard work to remove discrimination.
