Answer:
we are nourished and go to sleep at night on stomachs that are full. Sadly, for a billion people, that is not the case — they are malnourished, unable to rely on a sufficient supply of food or eat food that is substandard.
That is certainly food for thought. However, what is more alarming is that as much as 50 per cent of the food that is actually produced simply goes waste. And if we stopped wasting food, we would have had more than enough to ensure that every man, woman and child goes to sleep at night on a full stomach.
Consider these sad statistics: Up to 60 per cent of the fish caught by European fishermen goes to waste — it is either the wrong species or too small; 30 per cent of vegetables grown in the UK are thrown out because they do not conform to visual standards set by grocery chains and supermarkets.
Our food wastage is putting pressure on water resources. At the current rate of wastage, we will need a trillion cubic metres more of fresh water to produce food by 2050 — three times more than what we use now.
