By the late 18th century and the early 19th century most of the locations of the Earth had been explored except the icy poles i.e. Arctic Circle in the North and the Antartic Circle in South.  

Nobody lives in Antarctica except for scientific research and study. It is an uninhabited continent, unlike the Arctic.
