What Can/Will I Do To Make India Clean?

We can do a lot many things to make India clean; India does not make herself unclean; her people make it unclean. Countries become dirty or clean by her people. Take for instance the most advanced European countries such as UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Holland, etc; you will find they are known as the cleanest countries. Quite contrary to these advanced countries now take into consideration the state of developing courtiers of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. One won’t find these countries much clean. Why is this stark difference? The difference is in the mentality and attitude of people.

If India is to be made clean as per the international standards, her people will have to make cleanliness a top priority. If each one of us pledges to keep our own surroundings clean, India will automatically become clean. India is unclean because we fail to keep our own surroundings clean. In order to make India clean, I will do my role responsibly in keeping my surroundings clean.  Amit Abraham has very wisely said “Clean your mind and our country will automatically get dry cleaned.” India, our beloved motherland is in the direst need of cleanliness. The general state of our cities, towns, colonies, rivers, oceans, lakes, hill-stations, parks, gardens, public transportation systems, railway stations, public toilets, etc, all indicate we as a nation are not pro-cleanliness! The nationwide ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyan’ is another proof of our vice of apathy to the squalor lying uncleaned around us!

As the entire nation is abuzz with the cleanliness drives and campaigns under the impetus of ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyan’ launched by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendera Modi, let’s contribute to it by making ourselves clean first.  We must ensure we become the real participant in this crusade against the dirt and squalor in true spirit. We must start the cleanliness drive from our own home and surroundings.  Our zeal and enthusiasm for the cleanliness drive is useless, if our own home and surroundings are unclean, and we are spending hours cleaning the streets in other areas.

The best way to begin this cleanliness drive is our own room, our own cupboard, our own toilet, our own kitchen, our own garbage. Do we keep our own room and surroundings clean? Are we able to maintain the cleanliness around us? If we really do, we feel the satisfaction and contentment of being clean! Now we can lend a helping hand and our expertise in keeping the neighborhood clean! This is how we must go about this cleanliness drive. Remember, only a lit candle can light other unlit candles. Similarly, people who keep themselves clean and their surroundings clean, can help other people to achieve cleanliness objectives.

For example if I had to start contributing to keeping India clean, first of all I would ensure complete cleanliness around me. I would keep my own room, cupboard, clothes, washroom, etc, clean. If there were some used utensil lying in the kitchen, I would do them and not wait until my mother got free to do them. If I would see some trash lying here and there in the house or around the house, I would put it in the bin. If each individual shoulders the responsibility of keeping himself and his surroundings clean, the world would become a real Elysium.

The Government should also create proper cleanliness infrastructure; there must be proper garbage and sewage water treatment plants; there should be enough trees in and around the cities to keep the environment clean. If the Government fails, the people should put pressure on the Government. If all of us work concertedly towards achieving complete cleanliness, then it is possible. I can contribute in keeping and making India clean by doing my level best in keeping myself as well as my surroundings clean.
