Answer:

no of questions answered correctly = 22

no of questions answered incorrectly = 18

Step-by-step explanation:

let , x be the no of questions answered correctly.

y be the no of questions answered incorrectly.

since, Kenny answerd all 40 questions we can deduce that,

x + y = 40 ---- 1

For every correct answer 5 marks are awarded and for every incorrect answer 3 marks are deducted.

Knowing this and the fact that Kenny scored 56

=> 5x - 3y = 56 ---- 2

Applying elimination method on equation 1 and 2,

multiplying equation 1 by 3,

5x - 3y = 56

3x + 3y = 120

=> 8x = 176

=> x = 22

lastly ,

y = 40 - x = 40 - 22 = 18

thus

x = 22 and y = 18

verification: 5x - 3y = 5(22) - 3(18) = 110 - 54 = 56 = RHS
