An existing television studio shows the reverberation time as 1 sec. If it is required to have the reverberation time of the studio as 0.75 sec. How much percentage of the total surface absorption will have to increase to achieve the required reverberation time? Consider the volume of the studio remains unchanged.

Answer:

average surface absorbtion will increase by 25% to achieve required changes.

Explanation:

The formula for calculating reverbation time is;

T = (0.05 V)/a'S

Where V is the volume of hall, a’ is absorbtion coeffiecient and S is the surface area of hall.

And average surface absorbtion is = a’S

Now as per given statement, we have to determine surface absorption change, reverberation time changes from 1 s to 0.75s provided that the volume remains constant.

Now as we can see from formula, average absorbtion is inversely proportional to reverberation time.

So if reverbation time reduces by 25% (from 1 to 0.75), then average absorbtion will increase by 25% to achieve required changes.
