A universal indicator is phenolphthalein, it indicates the changes of colour and shows the pH of certain solutions. In acidic solution, Phenolphthalein stays colorless but in alkaline solutions, it turns pink. If you add phenolphthalein to a base sodium hydroxide, the solution becomes pink.
