» A computer network is a group of interconnected computers sharing services. We use computers to exchange information in our day to day life using different media, such as cables and satellites.

» When a computer is turned on and is able to access the network, it is said to be online and if it is unable to access the network, it is offline.

» The components of a computer network are:

✔The sender

✔The communication equipment of the sender

✔Communication channel

⇒ The communication equipment of the receiver

✔The receiver

» The transmission media is a medium that enables you to transfer data from one place to another. All these media are categorized into two types, namely, guided and unguided.

⇝Guided media transmits data through cables.

⇝The unguided media does not use cables. For eg, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC and WiMAX.

» Computer networks can be classified into three types:

⇝ Local Area Network (LAN): This type of network is useful when you want to connect two different departments of a building.

⇝ Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): It covers a larger area than LAN, but smaller than WAN.

⇝ Wide Area Network (WAN): It is a type of network used to cover a wide area or region.

» Two or more computers are linked with each other to:

⇒ Share files with other computers.

⇒Share sources, such as printer, hard disks and fax machines.

⇒ Share application softwares over the network.

⇒ Allow electronic communication.
