The density of ice is lesser than that of water due to the unique arrangement of hydrogen atoms when they form ice.

Hence ice being less dense than water floats on it.

Ice floats because it is less dense than the water. Something denser than water ,like a rock ,will sink to the bottom . As water cool and freezes ,it becomes less dence due to the unique nature of hydrogen bonds.
