• The Golgi apparatus was discovered by Italian histologist and Nobel laureate Camillo Golgi in 1898.

• Golgi complex/Golgi apparatus/Golgi bodies are in the form of a parallelly arranged interconnecting system of a cluster of smooth membranes with a central stack of flattened sacs or cisternae.

• This occurs in two distinct faces i.e., forming face (cis region) and a maturing face (trans region). Cis-face helps in transporting the substances into the cell. Trans-face helps in exporting the substances out of the cell.

• The principal function of Golgi bodies is the processing, packaging, transport and release of secretory proteins. of proteins into and outside the cell.

• Golgi bodies store these substances in the form of vesicles which are arranged parallelly to each other like stacks which are called cisternae.

• Glycosidation of lipids and glycosylation of proteins to form glycolipids and glycoproteins is done by Golgi bodies.
