Even a straight conductor has an inductance, albeit only in microhenries . Inductance, by nature, depends on creation of magnetic field by use of coils for the purpose of magnetic flux linkage to strengthen the field by combined effect of number of turns in a coil. Magnetic core materials help in increasing the field strength.
