An injury to medulla oblongata can lead to death. Why ?

Medulla oblangata controls all the involuntary and vital activities of the body. It controls the beating of heart and all the rhythmic respiratory movements. If this part is injured, sudden death may take place. Hence, injury to the medulla oblongata can lead to the death.
