Medulla oblongata present in the hind brain is the centre for control of respiration, heartbeat, involuntary actions like sneezing, swallowing etc. It also maintains sleep and hunger cycle.

By this it can be regarded as one of the relay station of the human brain.

Therefore any injury to it may lead to death.
