An insect in a well is 33 cm below the ground level. It jumps 26 cm and then
falls back 15 cm. How far is it from the ground level?

Solution

Consider the ground level to be at 0cm and the upward direction to be positive.

Initial position of the insect = -33 cm

its final position = -33 +26+ (-15)

= -33 + 26 - 15

we work from entenght

=-7 - 15 = 22 cm

The insect is 22 cm below the ground level.
