Dream With Your Eyes Open - #StayMotivated

Life of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is indeed inspirational. From being a great human being to a scientist of a global stature, he has never let the problems of life come in his way of his idealism. His focused approach, grounded nature & simplicity has made him one of the most lovable & respectable people globally, specially in India.

Considering his kind of nature, it is obvious that there should be many inspiring instances in these 83 years. Entrepreneurs & small business owners can take a lot of inspiration from his biography. In this post, I have tried to pen down a few such instances & their interpretation to the Entrepreneur community in India & abroad :

#Stayfocussed: Be determined towards goal & consistently march forward to achieve them, success will follow through.

From his childhood he wanted to be a pilot, and in the Airforce selection interview he got a 9th rank where only 8 got seleted. He was very depressed at that time. On his way back to home he went to Rishikesh where met Swami Sivananda and told him about how his dream was broken. Swami said something that touched me a lot " Khawish agar dilo jaan se nikali ho, wo pavitra ho aur usme shiddat ho to usme kamal ki ek electromagnetic energy hoti hai, raat ke andhere mein jab dimag so jata hai to wo bahar nikal jate hai, aur subah kayanat, praman se sitaro ki gati to apne mein lekar laut aate hai. Isliye jo socha hai uske shrishti awashiya hai. Wo takhleeq hoga. Tum viswas karo iss vachan par ki Suraj phir se lautega, bahar phir se ayegi."

He was rejected in the year 1958 & then he graduated from Madras Institute of Technology in 1960. From there he went on to join DRDO, ISRO. Finally, he was named as the Missile Man of India.

#EarnRespect: Be known for your qualities rather than for the position that you acquire.

IIT -Varanasi, 2013, convocation day, Dr. Kalam (Cheif Guest) refused to sit on a chair that was designated for him – because the chair was larger in size than the other chairs.

Noticing that out of the 5 chairs, center chair, which was for the former president, was bigger in size, he offered the chair to the VC of the college. The VC couldn't have accepted this and immediately, another chair was arranged for him.

Having been the former President of India & a renowned individual as well as globally know scientist the special chair was offered to him, but, he denied to sit on that. Entrepreneurs in the similar way may achieve great heights & shall be offered high positions but, it is their choice whether to remain grounded along with others or to take the supreme position offered. People are known for their qualities & knowledge do not require to attain a high position & proclaim supremacy.

#LoveThyNature: Care for the community & nature where you reside

Once, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam rejected the suggestion to put broken glass on the wall of a building that needed protection. Why? Because broken glass would be harmful for birds! This happened when Dr. Kalam was with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and his team was discussing options to secure the perimeter of a building that needed protection. Dr. Kalam reportedly said: “If we do that, birds will not be able to perch on the wall.”

This small instance shows Dr. Kalam’s concern about the community. Just like the mere incident above, an Entrepreneur is always surrounded by the stakeholders which includes vendors & suppliers, employees, customers, community, economy, board of directors. Thus, an Entrepreneurs should always consider how each step taken by him/her shall impact his/her stakeholders.

#AppreciateOthers: Appreciation works more wonders than a salary hike or monetary benefits.

As humble and generous the man is, President Kalam is known to sign his own thank you cards. One instance is when Quora user Naman Narain drew a sketch of Dr. Kalam and sent it to the President. To his surprise, the President sent him a thank you card, with a short handwritten message and personalised with his signature.

Just like Dr. Kalam, being an entrepreneur it is important to understand the importance of all of the employees working across the management hierarchy. A simple appreciation is what is all required to keep an employee or a team mate motivated & loyal, thus continuing to give higher productivity.

#ValueHardship: Value the real hard workers while they are working and they would reap out results for you.

Dr. Kalam was supposed to attend a college event as the Chief Guest, he surprised the students of the event’s organising committee by visiting them late in the night. He said he wanted to meet the “real hardworking people”.

This incident is self-explanatory portraying how an entrepreneur can lead by recognizing for the hard-work done at the ground level.
