An integer is chosen at random between 1 and 100. Find the probability that it is divisible by 8. Please give the correct answer as per the board answer key as there is a lot of confusion with the total number of outcomes being 100 or 98.

Integers between 1 and 100,

So, the total number of outcomes will be 98

Numbers divisible by 8,

8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96

There are 12 numbers,

So (1),

= 12/98

= 6/49

And (2),

98 - 12 = 86

86/98 =

43/49

I did the same mistake too in board exams ^.^
By taking the total number as 100,

I hope the Board give us marks on that

Rushil2405: But I think it should be 100
Rushil2405: Just Google ' what is between in maths'
EmadAhamed: This is the solution everywhere:/ including meritnation
Rushil2405: I still believe it's 100. I asked every single English teacher and she said that 1 and 100 should be included grammatically.
EmadAhamed: imagine there is a dog between you and me

If someone asks what is there between you and me, we can't say you, me and the dog. we can only say just dog.
KarupsK: if " from 1 to 100 " in the question then you can include both 1 and 100
Rushil2405: Ok. So if you remember in around 7th and 8th grade we used to play a game. It's like we used to ask to choose a number between 1 and 10 then subtract, multiply etc etc. And I always used to choose 10 and get the same answer.
Rushil2405: Just Google meaning of between in maths

Let A be the event of choosing a number which is divisible by 8

P(A) = 12 /98

= 6/ 49
