An interesting aspect of food chain is how unknowingly some harmful chemicals
enter our bodies through the food chain. Several pesticides and other chemicals are used
to protect our crops from diseases and pests. These chemicals are either washed down
into the soil or into water bodies. From the soil, these are absorbed by the plants along
with water and minerals, and from the water bodies these are taken up by aquatic plants
and animals As these chemicals are non-biodegradable, they get accumulated progressively at each tropic level. As we occupy the top level in any food chain, the
maximum concentration of these chemicals get accumulated in our bodies.

a.)The maximum concentration of pesticides are found in human beings. Justify.

b.)Suggest a method that could be applied to minimize our intake of pesticides.

c.)To which category from the following, can Man be placed with regard to
various food chains operating in an ecosystem?
i.)Producer.
ii.)Consumer.
iii.)Producer and consumer.
iv.)Producer and decomposer.

d.)What does the various steps in a food chain represent?
I.)Ecosystem.
Il.)Food web.
iii.)Bio accumulation.
iv.)Trophic level.

e.) Energy available at each and every trophic level diminishes progressively.
