An ion has +2 charge with an atomic number of 12 and mass number of 24. Calculate the number of electrons in the ion.

From mass number and number of neutron

Now ,

we can calculate number of protons or electrons = mass number - no. of electron

= { 24 - 12 } = 12 .

Hence the electronic configuration of this element would be 2 , 8, 2 .

Therefore , In order to become stable it would lose the last 2 electron and gain 2 positive charge , as given in the question

Also the resultant ion is left with 10 electron . so the element here is Magnesium { Mg ^2 } .
