When an iron nail will fall into a solution of silver nitrate (AgNO3), it will displace silver from the solution.

  • As iron is more reactive than silver, therefore iron will displaces silver from the solution.
  • The reaction that will take place is - Fe + 2AgNO3 →→ Fe(NO3)2 + 2Ag
  • Upon dipping an iron nail into silver nitrate, a coating of dendrite-like silver particles will deposit on the iron surface. The solution, which is initially colourless, begins to get a light green colour.
